LICADHO Canada’s adventure with documentary making started in 2007, with the first of a series of short documentaries, aiming at raising awareness about critical issues in Cambodia. The first of these documentaries addressed the issue of the survival of traditional music in Cambodia. This documentary was realized with the help and participation of 4 traditional Khmer musicians living in the Dey Krahorm Community, Phnom Penh.
Soon after the documentary project was completed, LICADHO Canada became aware of the land crisis occurring in Dey Krahorm, as well as the urgent need for the community to receive technical and legal support in order to defend their land rights. LICADHO Canada undertook a close collaboration with community representatives and with their help through the providing of documents and meetings, our organization issued the Dey Krahorm Land Case Explained report in January 2008.
Alongside with this important report, LICADHO Canada and its close partner Platapus Produktion produced many short films which are being used as advocacy and protection tools for the threatened communities. Our work now extends outside the limits of the Dey Krahorm Community.
Our videos have been distributed to national/international human rights organisations, communities, UN and Embassy personnel and have been used by Al Jazeera English, 101 East. Two of these videos are part of Amnesty International campaign to stop evictions in Cambodia and one is being used by WITNESS in a campaign to highlight global eviction crisis.
