Human Rights Defenders Apparel (HRD Apparel)

LC is literally and metaphorically putting the ‘human’ back into human rights! HRD Apparel is a funky new clothing line designed by LC volunteers to counteract the propaganda that suggests human rights and human rights defenders should be feared as crazy or ‘political’ talk. It’s HUMAN talk.

Since International Human Rights Day 2006, national and international human rights defenders in Cambodia wear blue traditional Khmer scarves to relay the message that
“we are all human rights defenders”. Later this year (2009), LC is expanding this message to Canada via HRD Apparel.

The aims of HRD Apparel

  • Support fair trade principles and Cambodian producers
  • Employment of two young leaders from Dey Krahorm
  • Engage Canadians on the topic of human rights and the roles of human rights defenders
  • Advocate for human rights in Cambodia, including the right to housing
  • Create passive streams of income into LC core funding, mainly community protection and defence
  • As a long term aim (end of 2010), income from HRD Apparel will go into a Human Rights Defenders Fund (HRDF) for Cambodian human rights defenders at risk.
